MOONLESS is Jayne Eyre meets Supernatural
In the English society of 1768 where women are bred to marry, unattractive Alexia, just sixteen, believes she will end up alone. But on the county doorstep of a neighbor's estate, she meets a man straight out of her nightmares, one whose blue eyes threaten to consume her whole world--especially later when she discovers him standing over her murdered host in the middle of the night.
Among the many things to change for her that evening are her physical appearance--from ghastly to breathtaking, an epidemic of night terrors predicting the future, and the blue-eyed man's unexpected infusion into her life. Not only do his appearances precede tragedies, but they're echoed by the arrival of ravenous, black-robed wraiths on moonless nights.
Unable to decide whether he is one of these monsters or protecting her from them, she uncovers what her father has been concealing truths about her own identity, about the blue-eyed man, and about love. After an attack close to home, Alexia realizes she cannot keep one foot in her old life and one in this new world. To protect her family she must either be sold into a loveless marriage, or escape with the man of her dreams and risk becoming one of the Soulless.

Though set in the 1700s, lots of women will relate to the heroine of Moonless (Raybourne Publishing 2014), Alexa. Considered unattractive by her parents, she is worried about being snubbed by her peers when she finally is presented as an adult to the elite, privileged, pampered, noble society in which she was raised. What ugly duckling girl with legs too skinny and chest too flat can't relate to Alexa's worries. But overnight, something happens and Alexia becomes the image of beauty, envied by women and sought by men. As she comes to terms with her new appearance, she meets a blue-eyed stranger who seems to understand her better than most of the boys in her peer group. She falls hard for him, but he disappears. When she tries to find him, she ends up in a world she doesn't understand with beings that don't make sense. It becomes evident that what she has become is both frightening and exciting--and the only world where she can be with this man she can't forget.Collier creates an intricate and fascinating supernatural world, one with plenty of surprises that kept me turning the pages. I thoroughly enjoyed joining Alexia as she struggled to understand her new world.
By the way: The tag line reads, "Jane Eyre meets supernatural". Most of the time, I'm underwhelmed when books compare themselves to classics. This time, it was spot on.

Moonless Maiden of Time Volume 1 Crystal Collier 9781629830025 Books Reviews
I can’t stress enough how much I enjoyed reading Moonless by Crystal Collier. Before I picked up this book, I was unaware of the author, however, since reading her novel, I have passed it along to other readers.
It’s been a while since I enjoyed a paranormal YA novel like this. But to simply categorize Moonless as YA paranormal would be in the least because of its uniqueness and originality. I’ve never read a plot quite like this one before which enabled me to gravitate to it even more. It was loaded with a tremendous amount of surprises and action. There were several times when I didn’t see what lied ahead.
The romance between Kiren and Alexia is spell-bounding. There are only a certain number of times when I can relate to a heroine and hero’s love for one another and this is one of them. I pictured Kiren’s struggles as he fought against the one thing which could destroy him; his love for his Alexia. And when Kiren turned her away for the first time with her unknowing his intentions, I could feel all of the emotions Alexia was suffering through. I can honestly say I was in love with both of them, their perils and ultimate submissions to each other.
This is not only a YA paranormal, but it is also historical. There was never a moment where I was confused about the timing or surroundings. Collier’s imagery and descriptive language captivated and mesmerized me. Her writing is breathtaking.
Moonless not only engages teenagers but adults could really be captured by this book. I look forward to the 2nd installment of this series!
Right away, I loved the dark tone Crystal Collier used to tell Alexia’s story in Moonless. Alexia is an intriguing character because she’s not beautiful, and in 1768 she feels no gentleman would want to be matched to her due to her too-thin frame and sunken jowls. Just in the first chapter we are thrust into a mystery revolving around a cloaked stranger with the brightest blue eyes, Alexia’s nightmares, and Weeping House (a mansion said to be haunted). When Alexia wakes in the middle of the night to find she is utterly beautiful and then moments later stumbles onto a murder, we are promised an intriguing story with countless twists and mysteries.
Kiren, the strange man with piercing blue eyes, captivates Alexia with his presence. He also captivated me. I wanted to know more about him. The little bit Crystal Collier shared with us in the beginning was excruciating! I wanted more. But it was worth waiting for. Trust me!
Crystal Collier is a master at creating a haunting tale and memorable characters. I couldn’t read this book fast enough! The romance is breath-taking. The suspense is nail-biting. The mystery is intoxicating. I am thrilled Soulless, book two, will be coming out soon. You can bet I’ll be reading it. I am a big fan of Crystal Collier!
I've been meaning to read this book for quite some time, and am pleased to say I finally treated myself to it. Based on samples of the author's writing as seen on her blog, I knew this gal had skills. This book is no different. Skill-wise, that is... the book itself is VERY different.
Different from anything I've ever read before, anyway. Creepy shadow creatures go on the prowl on moonless nights, and believe me, their intentions aren't good. They're willing to kill any and all humans who are foolish enough to venture out into the darkness, but they have a special craving for a group of super humans (for lack of a better word to call them) called the "Passionates." Our heroine Alexia didn't even realize this special race existed, let alone the fact that she's a part of it. The fact that her dreams... her nightmares... have a way of coming true has always terrified her, but it's never been something she wanted to consider too deeply. The more she learns about her past and the other Passionates, the more her life is bound to change. Whether it's through choice... or through destiny.
The story got off to a slow start, but trust me, it's worth the effort to stick with it, because the author's imagination will eventually carry you away into a whole new world of intrigue, danger, and romance. And YES, I will definitely read the second book to find out what happens next, because I'm not ready to end this deliciously imaginative journey just yet. (less)
